Ampol Limited (ASX: ALD) today announced its subsidiary Ampol Energy Pty Ltd has entered into a share sale agreement to acquire 100% of Fast Cities Australia Pty Ltd (Evie Networks), operator of one of Australia's leading public electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, for a purchase price of $225 million.
The acquisition, which is subject to clearance by the ACCC, is expected to add more than 1,030 EV charging bays to Ampol's network, creating a combined platform of approximately 1,425 bays nationally, across more than 400 sites. On completion, the combined AmpCharge and Evie network is expected to become one of Australia’s largest public EV charging platforms.
The acquisition represents a significant step in expanding Ampol's public charging network, bringing together an established national footprint of well-located sites, attractive long-term site tenure, grid connectivity, a strong customer base and specialist operating capability.
It also comes at a time when electric vehicles reach a new stage of adoption in Australia.
Over the last five months in Australia, electric vehicles have exceeded 20% of new cars sold on average.
Ampol Managing Director and CEO Matt Halliday said the acquisition of Evie positions Ampol to capture growth as the uptake of EVs and charging demand continues to gather momentum.
"For Ampol, EV charging is ultimately a question of disciplined investment at the right time. That means closely monitoring customer behaviour, EV uptake, site economics, grid connections and the broader charging network to ensure our capital is deployed where it can create the greatest value," Halliday said.
"Our job is to be there for customers with what they need, when they need it, as they choose vehicle technology that suits their needs.
“Evie’s high quality, attractive long-term tenure sites with established grid connections and some with expansion capacity, provides Ampol with an opportunity to grow its charging footprint at scale and at pace.
“Evie’s principal shareholder, Trevor St Baker AO, has been a genuine pioneer of Australia’s EV charging industry and his vision and capability have helped build Evie’s national platform and the foundations for broader EV adoption across Australia.
"Public charging infrastructure is a precondition for broad electric vehicle adoption. That is particularly acute in a country the size of Australia, where long distances between charging locations can contribute to 'range anxiety’ and deter motorists from purchasing an EV.
“Within the AmpCharge network, utilisation has increased year on year, with charging sessions increasing 116% and energy supplied increasing 120% in the first half of 2026.
"This gives us confidence in the strength of the business case that complements our traditional fuels business," Halliday added.
"A substantial portion of Australian households have no practical means of charging at home, while public infrastructure is also critical for commercial fleets, rideshare operators and customers travelling longer distances,” Halliday said.
This acquisition remains subject to regulatory approval and is anticipated for completion in the first half of 2027. Ampol and Evie will continue to operate independently until such time as regulatory approval is obtained and the acquisition completes.
