Ampol Installs Shark Bite Kits Along Kurnell Coastline

Kurnell – Friday 6 March

Ampol has installed five shark bite kits along the Kurnell coastline as part of the organisation's ongoing commitment to building a safer, resilient and more-prepared local community.

The initiative, supported by the Sutherland Shire Council, is in response to increased shark activity in the Kurnell peninsula.

Shark bite kits have been installed by Ampol at five easily-accessible locations along the Kurnell coastline, and complements existing emergency systems in the area.

The shark bite kits will be located at Bonna Point Boat Ramp and beach access points opposite Balboa Street, Dampier Street, Silver Beach Road and near Captain Cook Drive, and will include a tourniquet, pressure bandages and clear step-by-step instructions to support bleeding control.

"Ampol's focus is to enhance community safety, and we see the installation of these shark bite kits as a practical safety measure for residents and visitors to Kurnell beach," Ampol Community Engagement Manager Daniel Scully said.

"We want people to have access to simple equipment that can make a difference during an emergency. The immediate management of blood loss in major shark incidents is vital in giving victims the best possible chance of survival, where minutes and seconds count."

Sutherland Shire Mayor Jack Boyd said Council is proud to support this important initiative by Ampol, which strengthens community safety along the Kurnell coastline.

"Our beaches and waterways are a vital part of our community lifestyle, and while shark activity is a natural part of our marine environment, Council is committed to ensuring we have robust, proactive and evidence-based measures in place to keep our community safe," Mayor Boyd said.

"Building on the five Ampol shark bite kits already available, Council will be providing an additional five kits, supported by a further two replacement kits. Four of these will be mobile kits fitted to Lifeguard vehicles (utes and jet skis), with a permanent kit located at Cronulla Beach.

"We continue to work closely with expert partners including the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Surf Life Saving NSW to enhance our shark mitigation and emergency response capability.

"Through a combination of technology, increased surveillance, improved on-ground response resources, and ongoing collaboration, we are taking a vigilant and proactive approach to managing risk and supporting public confidence at our beaches."

The shark bite kits initiative follows Ampol's 'Heart Start Kurnell' program which was launched in June 2025. As part of this initiative two public access defibrillators were installed in Kurnell, at the front of the Post Office and the whale watching platform at Cape Solander in the Kamay Botany Bay National Park.

Ampol has proudly played a role in Kurnell for 70 years, and continues to value and respect our responsibilities within the community.
